They want to move your conversations somewhere more 'private'

They suggest moving from a dating app, gaming platform, or social media to a private messaging app — 'so we can talk properly.' This removes the safety features of the original platform and makes the conversation harder for anyone else to see.

What You Might Notice

  • They push to move off the original platform early

Before you've really gotten to know them, they want to switch to WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat, or phone calls.

  • They specifically want ephemeral messaging

Snapchat (messages disappear), Telegram (secret chats), Signal (disappearing messages) — they want conversations that don't leave a trail.

  • They frame it as romantic or special

'I want to talk to you properly, not on here.' It sounds sweet but it removes your safety net.

What You Can Do

  • Keep conversations on the original platform until you're comfortable

Dating apps, gaming platforms, and social media have reporting and blocking features. Private messaging doesn't.

  • Ask yourself why they need to move platforms

If someone is genuine, they'll be happy to keep talking wherever you're comfortable.

  • Tell your children: if an online friend wants to move to a different app, tell an adult

This is one of the clearest warning signs in child grooming.
