If you've sent money, contact your bank immediately. There's no shame in being deceived — these operations are sophisticated and target everyone.

Fake Identity Romance Scams

Someone creates a fake online identity to form a romantic connection with you — using stolen photos and fabricated stories to build trust before exploiting it for money, information, or control.

What You Might Notice

  • The person always has excuses for not meeting in person or video calling

They avoid any form of verification that would reveal their real identity.

  • The relationship moves unusually fast emotionally

Declarations of love, plans for the future, and emotional intensity develop very quickly.

  • Requests for money, gift cards, or financial help

A 'crisis' emerges that requires your financial help.

What You Can Do

  • Reverse image search their photos

Use Google Images or TinEye to check if their photos appear elsewhere online under different names.

  • Never send money to someone you haven't met in person

Legitimate romantic interests don't need emergency funds from people they've never met.

  • Report to the platform and to Scamwatch

    Report at scamwatch.gov.au.

  • Contact your bank if you've sent money

They may be able to recover or stop transfers.
